Collaboration and innovation have been central to strategies employed by Aging Network I&R leaders to meet the growing challenge of loneliness and social isolation as the COVID-19 pandemic persists. This workshop highlights why social engagement is so important to the mental and physical health of older adults and people with disabilities; how I&R programs can incorporate social isolation into their work on social determinants of health; and reviews collaborative and innovative best practices from the federal, state and local perspectives. Join us to hear from your colleagues about what has worked and share your own social engagement successes.

Objectives:

  • Learn why social engagement is so important to the mental and physical health of older adults, people with disabilities and their caregivers and how I&R programs can incorporate social isolation into their work on social determinants of health 
  • Reflect on how I&R programs can foster connections in their communities as the hub of collaborative efforts around social engagement 
  • Envision how social engagement best practices could be replicated in your own organization 
  • Review Federal, State and local resources for increasing social engagement and supporting the work your organization is already doing 
  • Share your social engagement successes

Sara Tribe Clark

Director of the Eldercare Locator

USAging, Washington, District of Columbia


Sara Tribe Clark is the Director of the Eldercare Locator within USAging. In this role, Sara oversees the operation of the Eldercare Locator Call Center, ensuring the responsive connection of people to community resources. Sara has nearly 20 years of experience in aging and disability services. Before joining USAging, she helped build the District of Columbia’s Aging and Disability Resource Center; was Director of the National Information and Referral Support Center at the ADvancing States; and spent 8+ years working within the aging and disability networks in Massachusetts. Sara’s time outside of work is spent on the other end of the age spectrum with a 3-year-old son and a 1-year-old daughter.

 

Nanette Relave

Senior Director

National Information and Referral Support Center, ADvancing States, Arlington, Virginia


Nanette Relave serves as the Senior Director of the National Information and Referral Support Center administered by NASUAD. The I&R Support Center provides training, technical assistance, and information resources to build capacity and promote continuing development of aging and disability information and referral services nationwide. In this capacity, Ms. Relave provides technical assistance to aging and disability information and referral/assistance (I&R/A) agencies, provides I&R basic and AIRS certification training to I&R specialists, develops training materials to improve the quality of I&R/A services, supports agencies’ efforts to develop I&R/A systems at the community and state levels, and coordinates workshops, intensives, and other events at NASUAD and partner conferences.  Ms. Relave holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the Catholic University of America, and a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Georgetown University.

Sherri Clark

Senior Aging Services Program Specialist

U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL), Washington, District of Columbia


Sherri Clark is a Senior Aging Services Program Specialist within the Office of Supportive and Caregiver Services of the Administration on Aging, an agency of the U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL). Ms. Clark manages a diverse portfolio of project focused on housing, engaging older adults, volunteerism, and consumer information & assistance. Ms. Clark has held several positions within AoA/ACL in the past 30 years. Prior to ACL, Ms. Clark worked 10 years with the Social Security Administration. A native of Washington, DC, she holds a Master of Social Work degree from Howard University.

Rebecca Levine

Senior Manager, Membership

National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a), Washington, District of Columbia


Rebecca Levine joined the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) in July 2014 and currently serves as Senior Manager, Membership, and Senior Program Manager, engAGED: The National Resource Center for Engaging Older Adults. Rebecca holds a Master of Social Work degree from George Mason University and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to joining n4a, Rebecca interned with Arlington County Aging and Disability Services, where she discovered her love for the Aging Network. Outside of work, Rebecca enjoys reading mystery books and spending time with family and friends.
