One of the most important factors to consider in conversations about diversity as it relates to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression is self-determination.

Self-determination refers to the process of deciding for oneself, without outside influence.

In this instance, self-determination refers to the idea that any external definitions may not reflect exactly how people define themselves. Sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression may carry different meanings for different people, similar to other personal identities like race/ethnicity or religion. All clients have the right to identify and define themselves as they choose.

This course explores the context around and services for the special needs of those who identity in the LGBTQ+ community.

Open to download resource. It is important to differentiate between some frequently misunderstood terms and definitions. LGBT is widely considered an appropriate acronym, but it is misleading because it consists of two separate concepts; LGB (lesbian, gay, bisexual) are sexual orientations, while T (transgender) is gender identity.

Part 2: Understanding the History of Stigma
Open to download resource.
Open to download resource. For many years, being gay, lesbian, bisexual, or same-gender oriented was considered a mental health disorder that elicited a wide variety of treatments, including electroshock therapy. Stigma is a deep-rooted issue and takes a great deal of time to erase. For that same reason, it is crucial that you reflect on your own belief systems and how you engage with LGBT people.
Part 3: Recognizing the Impact of Legislation
Open to download resource.
Open to download resource. 2011 saw the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, a statute banning openly lesbian, gay and bisexual people from participating in the military. Two years later, the Defense of Marriage Act was also repealed, allowing for the June 2015 ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States that same-sex marriages be recognized in all 50 states. However, there are still a number of areas in which individuals are not protected on the basis of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity or expression.

American Psychological Association - History of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Social Movements
Recorded 06/14/2021
Recorded 06/14/2021 On June 12, 2016, the popular gay dance club Pulse in Orlando was the site of a mass shooting by one assailant. With at least 49 dead and another 50 injured, this hate crime is being called the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. It occurred during what was LGBT Pride weekend for towns and cities in and beyond the United States. The immediate, caring response from mayors, police and FBI authorities, local and national politicians, and the President of the United States, who reached out to express outrage and concern, demonstrates the enormous shift toward acceptance and public support for the LGBT community. Although the LGBT community and individuals remain targets for hate violence and backlash throughout the world, the hard work of activists and allies made it possible to reach this era, where the perpetrators of violence, not the victims, are condemned as sick.
